New Research on Civil Society Activism and Refugee Norms
Human Security Lab researcher Charli Carpenter presented new research on human security norms at the Peace Research Institute of Frankfurt this week. The paper, “Weaponized Interdependence and Human Security Norms,” was completed with Human Security Lab doctoral affiliates Catie Fowler, Jaeye Baek and Jenna Norosky.
The paper uses case studies of Bush-era torture, Obama-era targeted killings and Trump-era refugee policy to examine great powers’ efforts at norm revisionism and the ways in which civil society actors can successfully use network power to defend human security norms.
The paper was presented in the International Security Colloquium at the Peace Research Institute in Frankfurt, where Professor Carpenter holds a fellowship. The paper is also currently under review at International Security.
