War Crimes Investigator Marc Garlasco to Speak at Human Security Lab

Seasoned war crimes investigator Marc Garlasco will hold a remote webinar at Human Security Lab on Tuesday April 19th to discuss the role of war crimes investigations in documenting and mitigating civilian harm in armed conflicts.

Garlasco is the military advisor at PAX where he works with the UN, NATO, and the US military on civilian harm issues. He was Chief of High Value Targeting on the Joint Staff during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 and led UN war crimes investigations in Afghanistan (2011), Libya (2012), and Syria (2017-2018). He has worked in numerous conflict zones such as Afghanistan, Gaza, Georgia, Iraq, Kosovo, Lebanon, Libya, and Syria. In 2005 his work with military whistle-blowers and Senator John McCain led to the landmark Detainee Treatment Act. He deployed on the USS Theodore Roosevelt in 2015 while with the Center for Naval Analyses where he assisted in a study of civilian harm issues during strikes on ISIS in Iraq and Syria. He is also the coauthor of the ICRC’s guide on explosive weapons in populated areas.
