Associate UN Humanitarian Affairs Officer Menty Kebede to Speak at Human Security Lab

UMass Amherst Alum Mentewab Kebede will speak at Human Security Lab September 29 at 2pm by Zoom about her experiences in the world of humanitarian politics and policy since graduating from UMass Amherst with a double BAs in Political Science and Legal Studies. Her talk will combine perspectives on the work of the humanitarian legal and policy community with insights about how undergraduates can find their way in careers in the human security sector.

Kebede is an Ethiopian-American who is now incoming Associate Humanitarian Affairs Officer for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Geneva. Prior to this, she worked for the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC), also in Geneva, as a Humanitarian Diplomacy and Policy Associate, in the Division of International Law and Policy; and before that in the humanitarian NGO sector both in conflict zones and in Washington DC.

Her professional background includes work in refugee protection, assistance and resettlement as well as in humanitarian crisis response settings in Jordan, Greece, Ethiopia and the U.S. She holds a Master of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University in Washington, DC, with a certificate in Refugees and Humanitarian Emergencies from the Institute for the Study of Migration.
